Banner Health was looking for ways to maximise the results (long term) from a chiller plant energy project at their Thunderbird campus. The chiller plant serves the 5 buildings on campus comprised of 6 York YK chillers with VFDs and a waterside economizer piped in parallel to the chillers.
With the temp sensor corrected and additional changes being implemented to the MT which resulted in savings between 30 – 35%.
Reducing the condensing temperature saves typically 1-2% per degree F. A state of the art air-cooled chiller could operate 10-15°F lower, thus providing a saving potential of 10-20%.
Total savings from low or medium cost investments are estimated to

The test indicated that circuit B had a problem with high condensing pressure which caused an excess consumption in energy of 35% for this circuit.
The estimated yearly energy consumption of the Refrigeration System is now approximately 654,000 kWh which represents an energy saving of approximately 123,000kWh per year (approximately 16% energy saving)
Measurements supervised and analysed by third party consultants over the following week, with similar climate conditions, proved that an energy saving of 25% had been achieved.
The measurements also clearly indicated that further savings and increased reliability would be achieved if system circuiting were modified
ETC Group conducted chiller testing using a portable ClimaCheck chiller analyser at Desert Medical center on chillers 3, 5, and 6.
The hook up of the ClimaCheck took approximately 1 hour. The facilities personnel did assist with the hook up of the CT Clamps and power connection. All the temperature sensors and pressure transducers were hooked by Joel Klobas of Emerging Energy Solutions. After spending about an hour to fine tune the ClimaCheck, we started to see an issue with the evaporator, KW per Ton and the capacity.

Compressors on the measured circuit has very much lower efficiency than showing from compressor software and condenser is showing poor performance. The systems should be checked so indication of low compressor efficiency is not caused by hot gas leaking backwards from some device/connection.
Total achieved savings for the seven month testperiod in these six stores were 318 000 Euro with a payback time of less than three months. After the pilot study around 100 stores has been equipped with fixed ClimaCheck monitoring systems.
By tracking all relevant measurements with ClimaCheck, it is possible to improve performance by 10-15 %.

Time used for measurement was 2 hours and part load solenoids that was not beneficial for this plant was deactivated: Annual operating cost decreased with 5000 Euro and removed high risk of future compressor failures
